January 16, 2018: MLK Day Figures: Elizabeth Freeman and Quock Walker

[To celebrate one of my favorite American holidays, this week I’ll AmericanStudy a handful of inspiring African American leaders, starting with my annual post on more fully remembering King himself. And leading up to a special Guest Post from one of my favorite current scholars and writers!]
I apologize for linking to myself, but if I had to highlight one piece of writing from the last year that truly exemplifies my public scholarly goals and project, it would be my piece for the Washington Post’s Made by History blog on Elizabeth Freeman and Quock Walker. I don’t know of any American figures—from any community, in any time period, for any reason—whom we should more fully and collectively remember than Freeman and Walker, and so wanted to make sure to highlight them and my piece in this week’s series. So if you haven’t checked out that piece yet—once again, it’s at this hyperlink—I would greatly appreciate your doing so. And then come back and share your thoughts or responses here, please!
Next figure tomorrow,
Ben
PS. What do you think? Figures or histories you’d highlight?
